The pro-life movement is full of mothers and fathers who have lost babies to abortion.
Karen Ellison aborted her unborn baby when she was 22 years old. Overwhelmed by shame and fear, she ignored her Christian upbringing and went through with what she thought would be a solution to her problems, according to the Christian Post.
It wasn’t.
Now, Ellison is a pro-life advocate, author and founder of the post-abortion healing ministry Deeper Still. She recently spoke with The Pure Flix Podcast about her journey to healing after aborting her child and her ministry to other mothers and fathers who have lost children to abortion.
She said mothers and fathers are being pitted against their own children in the modern culture. She pointed to the Golden Globe awards in January when actress Michelle Williams thanked God for her abortion and received massive applause from her fellow celebrities.
“The louder we shout to justify our abortions, the more you drown out your heart,” she said. “You want your heart to go numb, you don’t want to feel the guilt, you don’t want to feel the shame, you don’t want to acknowledge. You want the music so loud that you drown out the nightmares you are having.”

Ellison described modern culture as “idolatrous” for the way it treats children.
“I think that this whole abortion debate has tried to frame it around our identity. If I have to have children then somehow I am being enslaved in some way,” she continued. “Children have become the bad guy in this and that somehow takes away from my womanhood and takes away from my identity.”
Thirty years ago, when she aborted her child, Ellison said the abortion debate was not so prominent. She said she made her “choice” based on fear and shame, and it was the wrong one.
Eventually, Ellison said she found freedom and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. And now, she shares that freedom with other hurting mothers and fathers all across the country.
Her ministry, Deeper Still, based in Tennessee, has helped more than 1,000 women so far. It offers retreats and resources for men and women and training for church and pro-life leaders.
“Our approach to that is to come with a humble heart and repent from your sin …” she told the podcast. “We shed innocent blood, we took the lives of our children. We bring that into the light as a confession. We humbly bring that before the Lord. And God, in His gracious wonderfulness, is so willing to take what used to be our arrogant and in your face attitude and He will forgive us.”
One of her goals is church outreach, because many post-abortive mothers and fathers are hurting silently in church pews.
“The church needs to create a culture of light and life and healing,” she said. “We want to help empower the church and give pastors a voice and a way to talk about this.”
