New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called abortion a “sacred choice” Wednesday while refusing repeatedly to say if he supports any limits on late-term abortions.
De Blasio, one of the many radical pro-abortion Democrats running for president in 2020, appeared on Fox News host Sean Hannity’s show Wednesday to discuss abortion and other issues.
“I believe in Roe v. Wade,” de Blasio said. “I believe the decision is between a woman and her doctor.”
When Hannity questioned him on abortion limits, the mayor refused to directly answer the question, according to the Washington Examiner.
“Do you think a woman in the ninth month, putting aside health, putting aside life of the mother, do you support any restrictions until the baby is born? That’s a simple question,” Hannity asked.
“I believe it’s a smokescreen, because it doesn’t happen in America. Women make this choice, it’s a sacred choice,” de Blasio responded. “It’s a sacred choice for women.”
Here’s more from the report:
When pushed further, the mayor said, “It’s a very difficult choice, a very personal choice, and what we need to respect is that’s not a choice any woman wants to make. And the law — overwhelmingly Americans believe in protecting the right to choose.”
“Eight months into pregnancy, should a woman be allowed legally to have an abortion?” Hannity again asked the candidate, who is presently polling at 1% in the primary.
“Again, I’ve told you I believe [in] a woman’s right to choose. Period. This is a smokescreen,” de Blasio responded. “I’m not answering your way; I’m answering my way.”

The reason de Blasio did not answer is almost certainly because he knows most Americans view his position as extreme. Polls consistently show that Americans support strong restrictions on abortion, especially in the third trimester.
A new Gallup poll, released in June, found 60 percent of Americans take a pro-life position on abortion, wanting all (21 percent) or almost all (39 percent) abortions made illegal.
February polling data from Marist also found a huge pro-life shift of 17 percent after Democrats defended allowing babies to die in infanticide and legalized abortions up to birth in the state of New York.
Another poll from Harvard CAPS/Harris this spring found that just 6 percent of Americans said abortions should be allowed “up until the birth of the child,” while only 8 percent said they should be permitted up to the third trimester.
Most Americans do not support taxpayer-funded abortions either, but all of the top Democratic presidential contenders in 2020 do.
Democrats are alienating voters with their radical pro-abortion position. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s administration has taken a number of steps to protect unborn babies and end taxpayer funding to abortion groups.
