Australian abortion activist Jane Caro never has been shy about her decision to abort her unborn baby.
She chose to have an abortion about 40 years ago when her contraception failed, and she has no regrets about ending her baby’s life.
“I have never felt ashamed about the choice I made, and I have never had any regrets,” Caro wrote in a column this week at Women’s Agenda. “In fact, about 15 years ago, I talked about my abortion on a radio panel that included Archbishop Peter Jensen (he did not approve) and ex-[New South Wales] LNP leader John Brogden (he didn’t either).”
Caro blasted pro-lifers for defending unborn babies’ rights as New South Wales lawmakers debate a radical pro-abortion bill that would legalize abortions for basically any reason up to birth.
“That is why the absurd, inhumane and patronising 119 year old statute that make abortion a crime in NSW must be repealed and the abortion law reform bill passed without any amendments,” she wrote. “Any law that places half the population at risk of criminality simply because of their biology is a ridiculous and unsupportable law.”
Women are not punished for having abortions under the criminal code in NSW, but, erasing the statute, would allow abortions on viable, late-term unborn babies and for the purposes of sex-selection.
Caro accused pro-life advocates of lying to the public and “political bullying” – though the opposite appears to be true. Several pro-life lawmakers in NSW have received credible death threats recently in relation to the abortion debate.

She also misled her readers with claims about the reasons women have late-term abortions.
“Late-term abortions are a tiny percentage of terminations and are almost always the result of a tragic turn in a much-wanted pregnancy – either a threat to the mother’s life or such serious malformation of the fetus as to be incompatible with life,” Caro wrote.
But even leaders in the pro-abortion movement will admit that this is not true. Late-term abortionist Martin Haskell, who is credited with inventing the partial-birth abortion procedure, told American Medical News: “I’ll be quite frank: most of my abortions are elective in that 20-24 week range…. In my particular case, probably 20% are for genetic reasons. And the other 80% are purely elective.”
Caro also attacked attempts to amend the bill to protect unborn babies from sex-selection abortions.
“It seems they have realised they cannot prevent the bill passing so are attempting to impose unnecessary amendments, particularly about so-called later-term abortions and gender-selective abortions,” she wrote.
“I don’t think they really care about this at all, it’s just a rationalisation of their deep – and disturbing – desire to regulate and control women and their bodies,” Caro continued.
She urged lawmakers to pass the bill quickly so “we can all get back to normal.”
But abortion is not normal. It is not just any old medical procedure, and it is not good for society. An abortion intentionally destroys one human life and often wounds another’s. Women do not need to kill their unborn babies to be normal or free. They and their babies both deserve rights, freedoms and support from society, but those are things abortion will never be able to give them.
