It’s hard to decide what is the most disturbing part of a new Vice column about training people to abort unborn babies using papayas.
Maybe it’s the way abortion activists try to normalize the killing of unborn babies. Or the way New York City abortionist Zoey Thill makes light of perforating a woman’s uterus – a potentially life-threatening complication.
Or how one participant said she had no idea until the training how an abortion actually works – and she had had one. Or how Thill was 38-weeks pregnant with her unborn baby while she demonstrated how to abort other people’s babies.
These papaya abortion training workshops are becoming increasingly popular among abortion activists. They hold them on college campuses and in cities to show how easy it can be to abort an unborn baby. Using a papaya to simulate a woman’s uterus and the seeds her unborn baby, an abortion activist demonstrates how to insert a cannula, or plastic tube, in through the cervix and attach a manual vacuum aspirator to suck out the developing baby.
Vice writer Marie Solis described a recent workshop that she attended in Brooklyn:
“This is a 10-week gravid uterus,” Zoey Thill said, holding up a “pregnant” papaya the size of a large fist. “And this,” she added, gesturing to her own pregnant belly, “is a 38-week gravid uterus.”
Apparently, Thill did not mention that she was carrying a fully-formed unborn baby. That might have drawn attention to the disturbing truth of what they were doing. Even at 10 weeks, an unborn baby already has fingers and toes, a beating heart and a developing brain.
At one point, Thill described the perverse pleasure that she gets from aborting babies.

“It’s even more satisfying when it’s a real abortion,” she said after removing seeds from a papaya.
She told Solis that the workshops are supposed to be educational and de-stigmatizing. But her comments exposed some of the disturbing realities about the ignorance that the abortion industry feeds off of.
Solis wrote:
Thill told me that, at one of the first events she hosted, a woman who’d had an abortion years ago said that though she didn’t regret it, she’d had some unresolved feelings about the procedure. After seeing Thill demonstrate an abortion, she said she realized it stemmed from the fact that she hadn’t known what had actually happened to her body.
The woman’s story raises questions about how often the abortion industry fails to inform women about how an abortion works. Abortion facilities frequently challenge informed consent laws that require them to provide basic information to women prior to an abortion.
The disturbing revelations continued as Solis described Thill’s demonstration:
The narrow part of the papaya, where the stem would be, is like the cervix, she said. The broader portion of the papaya is like the upper area of the uterus known as the fundus—and it’s that part we would want to avoid puncturing with our tools when, in just a few minutes, we would practice performing an aspiration abortion on our own papayas.
But if we did by accident, that was OK, Thill said. “We’re not going to shame perforators,” she reassured.
A uterine perforation actually is extremely serious and potentially life-threatening. And treating it like it’s no big deal should send up major warning signals.
Thill told Solis that her main goal is not to teach people how to do abortions at home, but she did express an interest in linking up with people providing underground (read back alley) abortions.
She later added, “The more I can minimize the way we think of this as a ‘dangerous’ procedure, the more people will have better abortion experiences.”
But abortions can be dangerous for the mother as well as her unborn baby. Women have been seriously injured and even died as a result of abortion complications, including a perforated uterus. As of 2008, the Centers for Disease Control reported more than 400 women died from legal abortions in the United States, including 12 that year.
Abortion activists claim abortions are safe, but numerous state health inspection reports show a strong pattern of abortion facilities failing to reporting complications to the state. Studies link abortions to a number of physical and psychological health risks as well, including future preterm births, breast cancer, depression, anxiety and suicide.
These people are not doing women a service by claiming that aborting their unborn babies is normal and safe. Abortions kill babies and often hurt women, but the abortion industry does not want people to know that.
