Voters in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District head to the polls Tuesday, April 30 to decide who will advance in the race to fill late Congressman Walter Jones’ seat. Of the many contenders in this primary election, one stands out as the ideal candidate to represent North Carolina in Congress at a pivotal moment in history: Dr. Joan Perry. As both the leader of the nation’s largest pro-life political grassroots organization and a native of Greenville, North Carolina, I am proud to support this fearless advocate for unborn children and their mothers.
Dr. Perry’s distinguished career includes thirty years of experience as a pediatrician. She’s a mother of five and a woman of strong faith. Together with her husband Jimbo, she has devoted herself to serving her community, especially young people in need of a mentor. And she is vocally, unapologetically pro-life.
There could not be a greater contrast to Democratic politicians in states like New York and Virginia, as well as Democratic Party leaders in Congress who have pushed a radical expansion of abortion on demand through the moment of birth and even infanticide, to the horror of their constituents and the vast majority of Americans.
In a chilling interview, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam – a pediatric neurosurgeon himself – described how babies sometimes survive late-term abortions and are left to die without medical help: “The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother” about the fate of the poor, helpless child.
This inhumanity is shocking coming from a doctor who treats children. Dr. Perry can authoritatively debunk the lie that late-term abortion and infanticide have anything to do with “health care.” She is keenly aware that a doctor’s calling is to heal – not to kill the smallest, most vulnerable patients. She also understands the stakes of this battle and the unique gifts pro-life women bring to the table. In her own words, “We need a strong female voice to speak boldly for the rights of the unborn. I have held these babies in the palm of my hand and I have worked feverishly to help save their lives. I will not sit quietly and let them die.”

That clarity and determination shows why Susan B. Anthony List was so excited to endorse Dr. Perry and why we’re going all in to support her. Our partner PAC, Women Speak Out recently launched a five-figure campaign to mobilize pro-life voters to cast their ballots for Perry in the primary.
This election is truly an opportunity for North Carolinians to have a national impact. State lawmakers heard the outcry and took action, passing legislation to protect babies born alive during abortions. This is an excellent and necessary step, but to overcome abortion extremism in the long term, we must elect leaders like Dr. Perry with the courage to speak out for the innocent and defenseless.
Nearly 200 members of Congress have signed a petition to hold a vote on the federal Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which is being blocked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and pro-abortion Democratic Party leaders. If Joan Perry were in Congress today, I have no doubt she would be spearheading the effort to pass this compassionate, popular bill.
Dr. Perry’s victory in this race would send an unmistakable message to the abortion lobby in Washington: North Carolinians value life and reject infanticide. I urge every pro-life voter in the 3rd District to unite behind her now.
