Violence isn’t violence, and non-violence is.
It makes absolutely no sense, but ACLU attorney Ellie Rushforth’s ridiculous op-ed for the Santa Fe New Mexican tried to spin her abortion advocacy that way.
Attacking New Mexico lawmakers for voting against a radical pro-abortion bill in 2019, Rushforth claimed that it is an “act of violence” to protect unborn babies from abortion.
“How could forcing anyone to continue a pregnancy against their will ever be anything more than an act of violence?” she asked.
But Rushforth is not just advocating for ending pregnancies. She supports the killing unborn babies for any reason up to birth, including brutal dismemberment abortions that tear nearly fully-formed unborn babies limb from limb while their hearts are beating.
The 2019 New Mexico bill would have repealed a statute from the 1960s that prohibits abortions except in cases of rape, incest or threats to the mother’s life. The statute is not in effect because of Roe v. Wade. Without the statute, however, New Mexico would have allowed unborn babies to be aborted without restriction, even after Roe is overturned. It also would have repealed conscience protections for medical professionals who believe it is wrong to abort unborn babies. Fortunately, the state Senate defeated it in March 2019.
New Mexico already allows abortions up to birth by placing no limits on late-term abortions. The 2019 bill would have expanded that post-Roe and jeopardized pro-life medical workers’ religious freedom.

Rushforth slammed everyone who helped to defeat the bill, including pro-life advocates and lawmakers. Apparently, she will settle for nothing less than total acceptance of abortion for any reason up to birth, now and forevermore. She claimed the ability to kill an unborn baby is a “cornerstone of a woman’s health,” and it is immoral to oppose abortion.
“Having an abortion is a moral decision. But it’s a moral decision that only each individual, with profound consideration of and concern for their own life circumstances, can make,” she argued. “Anything else is an act of violence.”
Abortion is the true act of violence against another human being. This is a fact, not just a religious or moral belief. It is well accepted scientifically that a unique human life comes into existence at the moment of conception, and an abortion kills that life.
While all abortions are violent violations of human rights, some methods are particularly horrific. Dismemberment abortions, commonly done on second-trimester unborn babies, involve ripping the baby apart in their mother’s womb while they are still alive. New research suggests these babies may be capable of feeling intense pain as they are being torn limb from limb inside their mothers’ wombs.
Some states are trying to ban this brutal abortion method, but the ACLU is suing to keep it legal.
Rushforth may cry “violence” to further her agenda, but it doesn’t take a lawyer to realize who truly is advocating for violence against their fellow human beings.
