This week, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) introduced the Support and Value Expectant (SAVE) Moms & Babies Act to prevent approval of new abortion drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), prevent the loosening of FDA regulation of already-approved abortion drugs, and prevent abortion drugs from being dispensed remotely by mail or through telemedicine. The House version of this bill was introduced in September by Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH).
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised Sen. Hyde-Smith’s leadership in a statement:
“We are grateful to Senator Hyde-Smith for championing legislation to fight the reckless expansion of chemical abortion,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The abortion lobby has attempted to interfere with protective FDA regulations and flood the U.S. market with dangerous abortion drugs from overseas, threatening the health and safety of vulnerable women. On the heels of an abandoned study designed to discredit pro-life abortion pill reversal, which only proved the serious and potentially deadly risks inherent to abortion pills, the need for this bill could not be more pressing. We strongly support the SAVE Moms & Babies Act and urge Congress to pass it swiftly.”
A Guttmacher Institute report released in September shows a drastic increase in chemical abortion while the overall abortion rate and total number of abortions has decreased. Chuck Donovan, president of SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), added:
“The rise in drug-induced abortion should concern us all as it reveals the abortion industry’s increasingly determined effort to cut the overhead costs of surgical abortion while still profiting from the destruction of unborn children and the wounding of their mothers. Women deserve better than to be given dangerous abortion pills and then sent off to pass the body of the aborted child in isolation. The industry’s migration to chemical self-abortion is deeply disturbing as it carries with it the possibility of increasing the overall abortion rate over time and also carries with it a higher rate of injury, about which women are often underinformed or deceived.

“Every woman who is considering taking, has taken, or has been subjected to abortion pills should be aware of the steps available to her to halt the procedure and potentially save her child’s life. CLI and other organizations like Heartbeat International and its 24/7 Option Line are dedicated to connecting women who have changed their minds about consuming Mifeprex with a caring network committed to undoing these harms whenever and wherever possible.”
CLI experts have previously criticized flawed research purporting to show that self-administered, self-reported chemical abortions are not dangerous to women. Abortion activists continue to promote chemical abortion as safe and near-painless, but a recent study analyzed by Dr. Tara Sander Lee, CLI’s Senior Fellow and Director of Life Sciences only underscores the danger of abortion drugs.
AbortionDrugFacts.com, a new website developed with input from CLI’s team of experts and pro-life partners, aims to give women the information they need to protect their health and safety before they go through a chemical abortion, to have a second chance to change their mind after initiating one or to recover from the trauma they may already have experienced as a result of taking abortion drugs. In addition, the site provides women who have been hurt by the abortion pill an opportunity to share their story and/or make a confidential report to the FDA.
